Welcome to Mrs. Lancia's webpage!
Newsletter for the week of November 9, 2009.
Curriculum
Last week, students read the short story, "A Tell-Tale Heart" by Edgar Allen Poe. They are in the process of writing a persuasive essay in which the narrator of the book is portrayed as guilty of murder or not guilty of murder by reason of insanity. This week, students will continue their work in their persuasive essay and complete three rough drafts. They will peer edit their rough drafts in class, as well.
We are beginning our next unit this week on Lois Lowry. Lowry is the author of Messenger, The Giver, and Gathering Blue, three companion books. Students will be reading one of the three books in this unit. Students will take part in Literature Circles during class. They will also be held accountable for a Literary Analysis each week of the Literature Circle. The circles will begin on November 16 and will last through December 11th.
This week, we are beginning a utopia project to accompany our Lois Lowry book. Students are creating their own perfect country. Students will have a rubric and directions for this project by Tuesday. The project will be due Friday, November 20th.
Announcements
Remember to bring non-perishables (no glass please) to school for our food drive! The drive will end on Monday, November 16th.
Gradebook passwords were passed out to your child last month. Please be advised that parents can only obtain their own password if they come to RCMS with a picture ID handy, or if they fill out a notarized form. Information for this process is available in the student services office. Parents can always ask their child for their password and use it to check grades online.
Student/Parent Letter
Dear RCMS Students and Parents:
Another summer has passed, and with it, another school year has finally begun. Welcome to my class and to the eighth grade!
The eighth Grade Language Arts curriculum is both challenging and exciting. At RCMS, the curriculum is based upon the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, as well as the Wake County Public Schools Curriculum Guide. Eighth grade is a time of change and growth. Because of this, it is of utmost importance that students learn academic self-motivation and responsibility. The expectations for our classroom are created with the whole student in mind. I believe that in eighth grade, students have an active role in their own education.
As with any classroom at any school, there are certain guidelines and policies that allow us to learn in an inviting and productive space. As a student in my classroom, I expect you to adhere to these policies, such as respecting those around you, listening to me during class, completing assignments, asking for help when you need it, and coming to class consistently and on time. It is extremely important for students to attend class consistently because the majority of their grade in Language Arts comes from class work.
In addition to our classroom procedures, our 8th grade team, along with the RCMS team, strives to work together to provide the best learning environment for you. It is important to understand and comply with school-wide and grade-wide policies while in my classroom and beyond. Please make sure that you review and understand the information in the RCMS handbook.
I am very excited to begin learning with you this year. If you ever need to contact me, please email me at clancia@wcpss.net or call the school at 919-460-3504 and leave a message. In addition, I post class information on my Web Site every Monday and I update Gradebook weekly. You can find links to both of these sites on the main Reedy Creek MS Web Site. I hope I can help make your 8th grade experience enlightening and enjoyable!
Best regards,
Mrs. Lancia

MORE CLASSROOM INFORMATION
ACCELERATED READER
Students will be required to read an Accelerated Reader (AR) book each day to keep up with quarter AR goals. Each student is given a specialized goal that they must reach by the end of each quarter. This goal is derived from their STAR test score. The STAR test works in conjunction with AR to deduce each student’s personalized reading level. Students will be taking the STAR test at the beginning of the year.
HOMEWORK
Every step will be taken to help students complete their work in school. However, there will be many times where students will be expected to take class work home if they have not completed it while in class. Students will also have AR reading to do daily.
LATE WORK
Late work will be accepted if students are absent. Other late work will be considered on an individual basis.
GRADING
Students in my class will be assessed as follows:
Class work: 50%
Projects/Tests: 30%
Homework: 10%
AR: 10% (school-wide policy)
SUPPLY LIST
Students in my class will need:
To have their agendas with them at all times,
A folder for all handouts (there will be a great deal of information that I disperse throughout the year that will have to be kept until May),
A folder for class work/homework,
Loose-leaf paper,
Pencils/pens
In addition, our class is always in need of disinfecting wipes, tissues and art supplies. Donations of this sort will be very helpful!
Thank you,
Cecilia Lancia
