The Reading Acceleration class is taught by Elizabeth H. Allen, a Nationally Board Certified Teacher in Literacy who also has her Master’s Degree in Reading. Mrs. Allen is an experienced teacher who has been nationally recognized for excellence with The Academy of READING. Students work on The Academy of READING to hone their decoding skills in one section of the class. The other section is devoted to helping students learn to become strong independent readers through teaching them good comprehension habits and strategies. Students learn to work together collaboratively to improve their thinking skills. They also will learn how to choose a book to read, some organizational skills, as well as word and vocabulary strategies. Students who work with Mrs. Allen find their decoding skills, comprehension, vocabulary and fluency often increase by more than one grade level!
